My dog changed my life last Christmas. My husband and I had come home from shopping for our grandchildren and I was tired and went to lie down for a half hour nap before I started supper. The next thing I knew I woke up in the hospital with so many nurses and doctors working on me and I saw the clock on the wall and realized it was 11:30pm and not 6pm the time I wanted to get up to fix our supper. I am Type1 diabetic and was going into a diabetic coma. My little Abby always sleeps with me even when it's just a nap on the couch. I had read on the internet on how to train your dog for diabetes by breathing (when having a low glucose number) into a plastic sandwich bag with a piece of gauze or cotton ball in it. Then let the dog sniff the inside of the bag. To keep doing this to teach the dog the smell of what my breath smells like when going too low. Diabetics breath smells sweet like the juicy fruit gum when going low. I never knew if all the work worked or not but I know now it did. When Abby couldn't get me up she took off and found my husband who had no idea what was going on so he followed her and realized what happened. He then got me the medical help I needed. My husband said Abby cried the whole 4 days I was in the hospital and sat by the door waiting for me as she had never been away from me before. If it wasn't for Abby I would have died on the couch. She gave me another chance at life and I can never repay her enough for it. She is my life.
